Freedom of Speech

To speak our mind is our right as people.

Basic Rights

Basic Freedoms: Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and the right to petition.
Power exists in the hands of the people for a democratic society.
Allows citizens to criticize the government, in speech or in the press, without fear of punishment.
Cannot endorse a religion, nor can it prohibit citizens from practicing a religion if they chose to do so.
Rights are not limited to those mentioned in the constitution.
Limits on rights: NOT LIMITED!
Government can establish laws or rules to restrict certain standards to protect the health, safety, security, and moral standards of a community.
Rights may be limited to prevent one person's rights from interfering with rights from others. However, restrictions must be resonable and must apply to everyone equally.
Duties: Obey the law. (If not, you are endangering others and society.)
Pay taxes
Defend the nation
Responsibilities: ARE NOT DUTIES!
If not responsible, our lives will deminish.
Civil Republicanism: Need to know your rights and exercise them when necessary.
Ways to Participate: VOTE!
